Decide where the piano will stand before it arrives.
Moving a piano after delivery is a job, not an afterthought. Decide the position before the delivery team arrives and mark it if needed. Yamaha's maintenance guidance advises the following placement principles:
- Away from direct sun. Sunlight can heat the case unevenly and fade the finish.
- Away from temperature extremes. Do not place the piano where a vent or air conditioner blows directly onto it.
- Away from windows. Rain and condensation through windows can expose the instrument to moisture.
- Clearance. Leave enough space to open the lid (upright or grand), enough room behind the keyboard for the bench at the correct distance, and enough space for the tuner to work around the instrument.
Ask the dealer or technician for placement advice specific to your room, floor type and instrument.
Floor protection.
A piano's weight is concentrated on the legs or castors. Ask the dealer or delivery team what floor protection they recommend for your floor type and instrument. Common options include:
- Castor cups or discs under the contact points to distribute weight and protect the floor surface.
- A mat or board under the instrument, provided it sits level and stable.
The contact points vary between instruments (uprights and grands rest differently), so confirm with the provider what is appropriate for the specific piano you are receiving.
Climate and humidity.
The humidity and care guide covers ongoing climate management. Before delivery:
- Start managing the room climate before the piano arrives. If you plan to use air conditioning or a dehumidifier, ask the supplier or technician how to prepare the room in line with the maker’s guidance.
- Ask the technician or dealer whether a piano dehumidifier inside the case is recommended for your room and instrument, and have it installed by someone qualified after delivery.
- Power. If a dehumidifier or a humidity monitor will run near the piano, have a power socket accessible without trailing a cable across the floor.
- Balance. Too little humidity can be as harmful as too much. Ask the technician for the recommended range for your instrument rather than guessing.
Before delivery day.
Confirm the following with the delivery team before they arrive:
- Clear the path from the building entrance to the room. Remove shoes, rugs, furniture, decorations and anything that could be knocked or tripped over.
- Doorframes and walls: ask the delivery team whether they provide padding for the route, and what they need from you.
- Lift access: if the piano comes through a lift, confirm the lift dimensions, availability and booking with building management.
- The final position: have the spot clear and any floor protection in place before the team arrives.
- Be present. Have someone available to confirm the agreed position and receive the instrument.
The delivery logistics guide covers the route planning for different home types. This guide covers the room itself.
Room footprint planner.
Enter the room dimensions and the instrument dimensions to see whether the footprint fits. Add your bench depth and additional front clearance separately. These are your measurements, not recommended safety clearances. All values in centimetres. Nothing is stored or sent.

Where should I put a piano in a Singapore home?
Yamaha’s maintenance guidance discusses avoiding direct sunlight, temperature extremes and sudden environmental changes. Share your room plan with the supplier or technician and follow the actual instrument maker’s placement guidance. Allow space for the player, bench, lid and servicing.
Do I need floor protection under a piano?
A piano's weight is concentrated on the legs or castors. Ask the dealer or delivery team what floor protection they recommend for your specific floor type and instrument. Do not assume one method suits every floor.
Should I run the air conditioning before delivery?
Aim for a stable room climate before the piano arrives. A sudden change in temperature or humidity can stress the instrument. The technician who tunes the piano after delivery can advise on the ideal range for your specific instrument and room.
What should I do in the room before the delivery team arrives?
Clear the route from the entrance to the final position. Remove furniture, rugs and obstacles from the path. Know exactly where you want the piano before the team arrives, because repositioning a piano after it is placed takes effort.
